In the post-pandemic workplace, more and more employees are demanding benefits that support women and families\u2014and they\u2019re even <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.oviahealth.com\/family-friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">willing to change jobs to get them<\/a>. This means employers need to offer the most sought-after benefits, including fertility coverage, to compete for the best talent and maintain a diverse workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are a few key things employers need to know when deciding how to approach fertility coverage. First, <em>not<\/em> offering fertility benefits can cost you. Second, there can be hidden costs to offering fertility benefits without a holistic women\u2019s health program to back them up for you and your employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The stress of infertility may be taking a toll on your employees \u2014 and your retention goals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fertility treatments are notoriously expensive. And it\u2019s not a niche problem. According to the World Health Organization, <strong>infertility impacts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/978920068315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in six people at some point in their lives<\/a><\/strong>. But fertility and family-building struggles can feel like taboo subjects\u2014 which means that there\u2019s a good chance some of your employees are dealing with these issues, and you may not even be aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s hard to calculate the emotional stress of fertility challenges, we can put some numbers to the tremendous financial burdens people face:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Invitro fertilization (IVF)<\/strong> can cost anywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/health\/womens-health\/how-much-does-ivf-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$15,000 to $30,000 for a single round<\/a>. Some people conceive during their first cycle, while others may need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4934614\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six cycles or more<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Egg freezing<\/strong> can cost up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/23\/well\/family\/egg-freezing-risks-cost.html\">$8,000 for the procedure, along with $4,000 to $6,000 per cycle for medications<\/a> and up to $500 or more per year for storage fees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adoption<\/strong> can cost as much as $60,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Surrogacy<\/strong> can cost as much as $100,000 to $225,000.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When family-building is a priority, people can face nearly impossible decisions: How will they afford the costs? How much debt can they manage? These kinds of financial stressors can lead to emotional exhaustion and negative physical health effects, which can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9331279\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take a toll on a person\u2019s work life<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The financial pressures of fertility issues may be even tougher in the current economy. Inflation is up <a href=\"https:\/\/lao.ca.gov\/LAOEconTax\/Article\/Detail\/766\">17 percent since 2020<\/a> and according to PwC\u2019s 2023 Employee Financial Wellness Survey, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/efwsurvey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">57 percent of employees say that finances are the top cause of stress in their lives<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As financial distress ratchets up, valued employees may decide to search for higher salaries. (A study found, for example, that in states with mandated assisted reproductive technology (ART) coverage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/issue-brief\/coverage-and-use-of-fertility-services-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use is 1.5 times higher than the national rate<\/a>.) But the costs of fertility treatments don\u2019t end when treatment is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ART can <a href=\"https:\/\/reproductive-health-journal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12978-022-01363-4#:~:text=Women%20who%20used%20in%20vitro,those%20who%20used%20no%20treatment\">increase rates of preterm births 4X<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2016\/09\/perinatal-risks-associated-with-assisted-reproductive-technology#:~:text=Perinatal%20risks%20that%20may%20be%20associated%20with%20assisted%20reproductive%20technology,%2C%20preeclampsia%2C%20and%20birth%20defects\">multiple births by more than 30 percent<\/a>, which can both lead to expensive health complications. Consider: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2013\/11\/131111091530.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">singleton births cost about $21,000 per delivery, twins can cost up to $105,000, and triplet births <strong>may cost 20 times as much as a singleton<\/strong> \u2014 up to $400,000 or more<\/a>.&nbsp;A preterm birth can cost up to $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3828583\/\">95,000 per instance<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers can manage the costs of fertility by offering more holistic support.
