Over the past few months, though, you\u2019ve probably noticed <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> nonverbal communication start to get more refined, even as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they moves<\/span> closer and closer to communicating in words, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"resource-content\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<p>This happens because <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s communication through body language starts out pretty one-sided, with you reading <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> instinctive cues. These cues may come partially because <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> has been observing you, and how the way you move and act&nbsp;communicates your mood, but mostly they\u2019re just the instinctive physical responses to the way <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they feels<\/span>, which you have learned to read. Motions like turning <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> head away when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> overwhelmed and needs a little break, or yawning and rubbing <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> eyes when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> tired only make sense.<\/p>\n<p>Other motions <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> makes from very early on are a little harder to decipher for first-time parents. These include tugging on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> ears not just if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> having <em>ear<\/em> pain, but also sometimes because <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> mouth, throat, or nasal passages are hurt, sick or irritated, or if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> having teething pain. Fidgeting or hair twirling as a sign of nerves or being overwhelmed make total sense the same way they do for fidgety, nervous adults.<\/p>\n<p>Still other motions, like kicking <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> feet with joy or excitement, are easy to read alongside the expression on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> face. If <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is having gas pain, and draws <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> legs up to <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> chest in response, there\u2019s a good chance that discomfort is going to be just as obvious in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> face as it is in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> movements.<\/p>\n<p>What is changing as <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> gets older, though, is that eventually, this unspoken communication starts to get a lot less one-sided as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they starts<\/span> to learn that you\u2019ll respond to <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> motions, and then starts making them specifically to be responded to. <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They may<\/span> kick out to make a noise to get your attention if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they misses<\/span> you, smile at you to get you to smile in response, or raise <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> arms to ask to be picked up. Even that infuriating thing where <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they<\/span> catches your eye and deliberately drops something so you\u2019ll lean over and pick it up again is <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> way of actively engaging you in a conversation without words.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does it feel to be a teacher?
