Later, when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they cries<\/span> a little less and babbles more, it can be frustrating (for both of you) when the words are so close, but aren\u2019t quite there. There\u2019s no way to translate exactly what <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s saying into language as we know it because <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> still just learning to even think in those terms, but there are a few different strategies you can use to start to narrow down what <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> trying to tell you.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Dunstan baby language<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Dunstan Baby Language is the theory that all babies have five distinct sounds they make before they cry out, which can tell their parents what it is that they need. The theory hasn\u2019t been scientifically proven, but it <em>has<\/em> been featured on Oprah, which is almost like proof, right?* Responses to the Dunstan Baby Language system have been mixed, but while it\u2019s entirely possible that there\u2019s something distinctive about babies\u2019 different cries, it\u2019s also true that they start to make signs that they\u2019re hungry or tired or gassy before they start crying much of the time. So even if it works, it\u2019s no substitute for knowing <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s personal cues and habits.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Babbling<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> starts to get the hang of using <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> vocal cords, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they will<\/span> start making noises that sound more and more like words. This isn&#8217;t just because <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019s<\/span> got more sounds at <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> disposal, but also because <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they has<\/span> been paying attention to your speech patterns, and is figuring out how conversation is supposed to sound. <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They isn\u2019t<\/span> communicating yet, but <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> working up to it, so responding to babble is important, since it helps <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> learn the back and forth pattern of conversation. &#8220;Chatting&#8221; with <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> like this may not be helpful as actual communication now, but it&#8217;s a great way to get started having the heart-to-hearts that can help the two of you stay connected later in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> life.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Speaking in code<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While it\u2019s definitely <em>possible<\/em> that <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> will move straight from babble to perfectly clear words and, shortly after that, complete sentences, many babies spend some time transitioning from making up sounds to using their own, invented words to refer to some of the most important things in their world. A lot of the time, these \u201ccode words\u201d are related to the actual name for the family dog, or <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite meal of the day, but in syllables <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> can easily manage. But other times, you may notice <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> using sounds to refer to certain things that you don\u2019t even know where <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they<\/span> got them from, like <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> inventing <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own language! There\u2019s no reason to worry about these, since they\u2019ll start to phase themselves out as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they gets<\/span> better and better with the language or languages around <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, so enjoy them while they last!<\/p>\n<p>*Note: Being featured on Oprah is decidedly not proof.
