{"id":111778,"date":"2020-09-28T13:06:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T17:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.oviahealth.com\/guide\/111778\/could-you-be-at-risk-for-postpartum-depression\/"},"modified":"2025-02-03T11:20:56","modified_gmt":"2025-02-03T16:20:56","slug":"could-you-be-at-risk-for-postpartum-depression","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/111778\/could-you-be-at-risk-for-postpartum-depression\/","title":{"rendered":"Could you be at risk for\u00a0postpartum depression?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are at a higher risk of developing depression during or after pregnancy can do a few things to get ahead of mood disorders so that if they appear, they\u2019re ready to deal with them and have support in place.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, what are the risk <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factors<\/span> for developing depression during and after pregnancy? <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of factors that can make people more likely to experience depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period. These factors include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life stressors, including stress at work, financial stress, housing instability, familial or relationship stress, or anything else that\u2019s adding extra emotional strain throughout pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a history of depression or other mood disorders<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lack of social support\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lack of workplace support\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014 for example, when a woman\u2019s workplace doesn\u2019t offer strong support to parents in the form of paid time off for medical appointments or family leave; the support of their partner\u2019s workplace is also a factor, as this can determine how present they can be to offer support both during pregnancy and after baby\u2019s arrival<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unintended pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intimate partner violence and being involved in an emotionally abusive relationship<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violent or emotionally abusive relationships with family members<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have risk factors or feel like you need support, talk therapy is a great way for pregnant people who don\u2019t have depression to stay aware of changes in their moods and to identify types and sources of stress as they emerge. And if depression does emerge, those who have already sought talk therapy will have trust-based relationships with therapists to immediately draw on.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to keep an eye out for mood changes, and the possibility of mood disorders, is to keep track of sleep patterns, make note of any changes, and be sure to get plenty of rest. It\u2019s also a good idea to make a plan for getting enough rest after giving birth. This is helpful both because changes in sleep patterns, including sharp increases and decreases in sleep, are signs of depression but also because lack of sleep has been suggested as a contributing factor in postpartum depression.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;ve had depression or other mood disorders in the past, it&#8217;s important to keep an eye out for symptoms you\u2019ve experienced before. There\u2019s no guarantee that depression during or after pregnancy will look exactly the same as depression earlier in life, but awareness is key.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many experts recommend that people who are already being treated for depression before pregnancy continue that treatment throughout pregnancy (medication, therapy, etc.) For those who have discontinued treatment during pregnancy, if depression returns, it\u2019s a good time to talk through the risks and benefits of returning to the pre-pregnancy treatment plan. Even when there are risks associated with certain medications, in many cases, the risk to mom and baby of untreated depression may be considered even more serious.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of depression during pregnancy can include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling sad without any break from it (all downs, no ups)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having trouble enjoying the things you usually like to do<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequent crying<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe mood fluctuations<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excessive sleeping or trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoiding conversations about feelings<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low self-esteem about motherhood, or feeling especially unprepared for parenthood<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excessive anxiety about the baby<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not responding well or feeling comforted when the people in your life try to reassure you<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having trouble sticking to a healthy prenatal care routine<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using smoking, drinking, or illicit drugs as a means to cope with emotions<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low weight gain for your pregnancy\u2019s trajectory due to decreased appetite or diet<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sense of hopelessness<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoughts of hurting someone else, including the baby<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice one or more of these symptoms, you should talk to your healthcare provider about the possibility of depression.
