One woman recently posted, \u201cMy boss cut my hours and acts like I\u2019m incapable of working when I\u2019m only 23 weeks pregnant.\u201d Another said, \u201cIt\u2019s crazy. This is my first pregnancy, and I didn\u2019t know stuff like this really happens to pregnant women all the time.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/wb\/resources\/WB_WorkingMothers_508_FinalJune13.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, there are 25.1 million working mothers with children under 18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. alone. Being pregnant and having children is something that is natural and normal &#8211; yet, somehow there\u2019s still a stigma in the workplace. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know that pregnant women and mothers are entirely capable of succeeding &#8211; and excelling &#8211; at their jobs. But clearly we have a long way to go in changing how women are treated in the workplace. So how do we make that change happen? <\/span><strong>Here are a few places to start. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Know your rights<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., employees who are pregnant or new parents are protected by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/pregnancy\/youre-pregnant-now-what\/know-your-pregnancy-rights\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain federal laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even if you\u2019re not experiencing discrimination, it\u2019s can be helpful to familiarize yourself with these&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laws<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/eeoc\/publications\/pregnant_workers.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ensures that you cannot be fired for your pregnancy\u00a0and enforces other standards for hiring, training, sick leave use, and workplace accommodations.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/eeoc\/publications\/pregnancy_factsheet.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires companies with 15 or more employees to provide you with work accommodations if you have a pregnancy-related condition that affects how you work, such as preeclampsia, depression, gestational diabetes, and\/or cervical insufficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once your little one arrives, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/whd\/fmla\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families and Medical Laws Act (FMLA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives new parents 12 weeks of unpaid, job- and benefits-protected leave. (It also covers medical leave in case of a family member&#8217;s illness.) You can read a helpful FAQ about the FMLA from the National Partnership for Women and Families <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpartnership.org\/research-library\/work-family\/fmla\/guide-to-fmla.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly, the hope is that your employer will be doing all they can to support your pregnancy and journey into parenthood. But if at any point in your pregnancy you think your legal rights have been violated, you&#8217;ll want to file a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/employees\/charge.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charge of Discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within 180 days of the event. Pregnancy discrimination is serious, and filing a charge requests that the commission take remedial action, which could lead to mediation and settlement, investigation, or even a lawsuit. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do what you can where you are<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though these laws are in place, the stigma still exists &#8211; and there is action we can all take to fight it. If you think your employer could be more women- and family-friendly, you\u2019re probably not the only one in your organization who thinks so. Bring your concerns to the attention of your Human Resources representative, and suggest solutions if you have them! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you\u2019re in a position of power at your organization, you should do all you can to advocate for women and families, from formal policies to day-to-day practices that will help improve your workplace culture. At Ovia Health, I work with some of the biggest employers in the U.S. to help them deliver maternity and family benefits to their employees. I\u2019ve learned that the most successful employers are the ones supporting women and families, because this sort of support is good for employees <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">businesses. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, we have a long way to go in changing how women are treated in the workplace. But all women and parents deserve to feel supported. Women are strong, capable, and talented &#8211; at home and at work &#8211; and it\u2019s time they were treated this way<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
