{"id":10908,"date":"2021-02-19T09:23:58","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T14:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10908\/stages-of-crawling\/"},"modified":"2021-12-27T16:02:02","modified_gmt":"2021-12-27T21:02:02","slug":"stages-of-crawling","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10908\/stages-of-crawling\/","title":{"rendered":"Stages of crawling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not all babies crawl, but for the babies who do, it\u2019s a double dose of exploration, both as the first way <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> gets the chance to explore the world around <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> under <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own power and at <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own pace, but also as a time when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> figuring out brand new ways to use <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> body and muscles. There are several stages of pre-crawling that many babies move through, but not every baby even progresses through each stage, with many skipping some completely. It&#8217;s also important to remember that every baby progresses at <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own pace, especially when it comes to big milestones like crawling. As <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> makes these dramatic physical advances, it can also have an impact on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> sleep &#8211; many parents notice that, before reaching a big physical or developmental milestone, their babies go through periods of needing a little (or even a lot of) extra sleep.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sitting<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You\u2019ll know <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is moving in the direction of crawling when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they starts<\/span> sitting up on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own. Often, babies learn to crawl right from this sitting position, as they go from sitting and balancing with their hands on the floor in front of them to pushing themselves up on all fours, and then figuring out how to move themselves forward from there.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Crawling position<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Once <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> ends up in the crawling position &#8211; pushing <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> up on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> hands and knees &#8211; <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they may<\/span> stall out a bit, and stay in one place on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> hands and knees or feet, swaying or wriggling back and forth as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they starts<\/span> to work out the mechanics of propelling <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> forward. On the other hand, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they might<\/span> start moving <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> across the floor in a sort of wriggling creep before <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they ever gets<\/span> to that semi-upright position.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Scooting, creeping, crab walk<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that not all babies crawl the same way. Crawling isn\u2019t an unavoidable step on the road to walking, and <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> could end up cruising around in a funny looking pseudo-crawl just as easily as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they could<\/span> skip that step entirely and vault straight into walking. If the way <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is moving doesn\u2019t match up with a textbook baby-crawl, don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s probably a perfectly normal variation. However, it&#8217;s a good idea to contact the doctor if <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is only using one half of <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> body to crawl, or has not started moving around in any of these ways by 12 months.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Showtime<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Crawling, just the way you picture it when you picture babies moving around. <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> may even end up moving faster than you\u2019re ready for, because once <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they figures<\/span> out the mechanics of crawling, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they could<\/span> easily get very good very fast.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, it may take <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> a little while to really get the hang of things. In fact, a lot of babies figure out how to crawl backwards before they manage to start moving forward!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s perfectly okay for a child to regress for a bit when it comes to crawling &#8211; <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> probably just temporarily using <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> time and attention to focus on a different skill &#8211; but if you&#8217;re concerned, don&#8217;t hesitate to check in with your pediatrician to make sure everything is on-track.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Pulling up<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> starts pulling <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> upright by holding onto things and then pulling <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> along from there, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> moving out of the crawling phase, and is very close to walking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not like {{ PRONOUN_BABY }} can just get up and crawl any time.
