There are a lot of factors that go into <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>&#8216;s first words, though, from the very obvious to the less obvious, that contribute to what those very first words might be. Having an idea of what those factors are might give your bet on <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>&#8216;s first words a better chance than your partner\u2019s. Sucker.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The obvious<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is more likely to say words that <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they has<\/span> heard before, right? Chances are, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they isn\u2019t<\/span> going to come up with &#8220;antidisestablishmentarianism&#8221; on <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own. Words that <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they hears<\/span> <em>a lot<\/em> have an even better chance of making the cut &#8211; words like \u2018mama,\u2019 \u2018dada,\u2019 and the family dog\u2019s name might come up a lot, so they\u2019re going to be in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> head more often. Other words <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they hears<\/span> a lot, like names of <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite foods or toys, or colors or animals that are identified in a favorite picture book have a pretty good shot as well.<\/p>\n<p>One of the other more obvious factors is that <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> has never spoken before, so <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> more likely to start with smaller words, before graduating up into the multisyllabic ones. And remember, this isn\u2019t a task-oriented process for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they isn\u2019t<\/span> just going for a word <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they <em>can<\/em><\/span> say, it\u2019s got to be a word <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they <em>wants<\/em><\/span> to say, so the things <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they loves<\/span> have a good shot, too, whether that\u2019s balls, bubbles, green beans, or garbage trucks.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The not-so-obvious<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Babies like repeating sounds. It\u2019s probably no coincidence that \u2018kiddie\u2019 words include a lot of repeating consonants, so not just \u2018mama,\u2019 and \u2018dada,\u2019 but also things like \u2018kitty-cat,\u2019 and \u2018puppy\u2019 are options on <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s menu of words <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> could choose from.<\/p>\n<p>Some babies prefer to start with hard, definitive consonants, so <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> might get to \u2018dada\u2019 a bit sooner than \u2018mama.\u2019 On the other hand though, some babies use their fixation on faces to learn sounds that are really visible when watching you talk, like \u2018m\u2019 and \u2018p,\u2019 so <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> could pop out with one of those, as well!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is a wild-card, so there\u2019s no way to <em>know<\/em> what <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they will<\/span> say first, and when, but now you\u2019re armed to take a pretty educated guess. <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s biggest influence is you, even if what that influence will be is also unpredictable, so go forth and have a conversation with your pre-verbal infant!
