Reading can be surprisingly good for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> even when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> a few weeks old &#8211; <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they can<\/span> respond to the sound of your voice, look at pictures, or develop motor skills by grabbing for the book or turning the pages.<\/p>\n<p>And sure, fine-motor-skill development and the sound of your voice are things that <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is going to be able to get from you outside of story time, too, but an analysis of many different studies done by the Center for Early Literacy Learning in 2012 suggests that if you read to <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> early and often, it could be a great way to give <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> a head start in terms of communication and language development, so why wouldn\u2019t you give it a shot?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Engagement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You already know that the sound of your voice is soothing to <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>, and that <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they likes<\/span> to stick close to you. Reading together can be a great way to both indulge in and strengthen that bond. Plus, reading together can be a great part of <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s end-of-the-day, winding-down-before-bed routine.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Vocabulary<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Children who start school with limited vocabularies in comparison to the other children in their class have a hard time catching up in school, and starting kindergarten with fewer words in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> back pocket could affect <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s education for years into the future. Reading together is a great way to expose <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> to new words early on. Even if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they doesn\u2019t<\/span> take them in right away, the familiarity that comes with having new words come up in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> life regularly will help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> out.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>On your mark, get set, read!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>More than anything, reading with <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> should be fun for both of you, so enjoy yourself!
