The first half-year of Baby<\/span>\u2019s life is full of extremes, and includes both some of the happiest moments of your life and some of the most exhausted, confused, or terrified. Now that Baby<\/span> is getting old enough, and you\u2019re getting familiar enough with them<\/span> that you\u2019re starting to get into the groove of this whole thing, it\u2019s nice to take a look back and appreciate how much Baby<\/span> has grown up during that whirlwind.<\/p>\n

  1. Baby<\/span> can see it in your eyes<\/strong>
    \nBaby<\/span> may not be up for involved debates about world affairs yet, but they is<\/span> definitely starting to figure out the basics of how communication is supposed to work. Not only is they<\/span> making facial expressions that express their<\/span> feelings, but they is<\/span> starting to notice and react to your emotions based on your facial expressions, too.<\/li>\n
  2. Going ga-ga for \u2018goo-goo ga-ga\u2019<\/strong>
    \nBaby<\/span> is still a little ways away from speaking in words, but they has<\/span> started to make sounds that may sound a lot like<\/em> words. They may<\/span> even have started to babble responses when you talk to them<\/span>, and to wait for you to respond when they talks<\/span> to you. This is their<\/span> way of learning the pattern of conversation, just like how babbling is their<\/span> way of learning the sounds they will<\/span> need when they does<\/span> start to speak.<\/li>\n
  3. Turning frowns upside down!<\/strong>
    \nAt this point, Baby<\/span> will have been smiling socially – smiling in response to your smile, or smiling at you – for a few months now. The first time you notice that they is<\/span> smiling at you<\/em>, not past you, or around you, or in their<\/span> sleep, or because of gas, is one of those magic moments that make the harder parts of parenthood worth it. Luckily, once Baby<\/span> starts smiling on purpose, they is<\/span> only going to start smiling more and more often, and it\u2019s one of those thrills that doesn\u2019t really get old.<\/li>\n
  4. Baby<\/span> wiggles and giggles<\/strong>
    \nNot long after they started<\/span> smiling, Baby<\/span> probably started laughing, too. They is<\/span> still developing their<\/span> sense of humor, but there are a few things that they probably thinks<\/span> are hilarious, like you and your partner making funny faces, peek-a-boo, or your tickling fingers.<\/li>\n
  5. Baby<\/span> on-the-go<\/strong>
    \nThat stage where Baby<\/span> does their<\/span> best to climb everything in sight is still a little ways away (but it is coming, so brace yourself!) but Baby<\/span> is already leaps and bounds more mobile than they was<\/span> as a newborn, even if they isn\u2019t<\/span> quite up for leaping and bounding yet. In the past 6 months, Baby<\/span> has changed from someone who pretty much stays where you put them<\/span> to a sitting up and rolling over machine. Some babies even use their new rolling skills to cover some serious distance.<\/li>\n
  6. “What happened to my eyes?”<\/strong>
    \nNow that Baby<\/span> isn\u2019t a newborn anymore, there\u2019s already some nostalgia in looking back at those pictures you took on the day they was<\/span> born, and how tiny they was<\/span> then. Tiny and …different. Since Baby<\/span> was born their<\/span> eyes and hair may have seriously changed color and (in the case of their<\/span> hair) texture. Eye changes have probably happened by now, if they\u2019re going to.
