{"id":10764,"date":"2018-07-30T07:54:21","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T11:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10764\/what-is-object-permanence\/"},"modified":"2021-12-28T15:23:26","modified_gmt":"2021-12-28T20:23:26","slug":"what-is-object-permanence","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10764\/what-is-object-permanence\/","title":{"rendered":"Helping your child learn about object permanence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Understanding that a physical object still exists even when it\u2019s no longer visible might seem obvious to us, but when it comes to babies, object permanence doesn\u2019t usually sink in until 4 to 7 months after birth.<\/p>\n<h2>How to answer: &#8216;What is object permanence?&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>When <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> sees you take a toy away, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they probably doesn\u2019t<\/span> realize that you\u2019ll eventually bring the toy back: to <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>, that toy is gone. This can lead to confusion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/112690\/par-health-nicu-mod-learning-baby-cues\/\">crying spells<\/a>. And that\u2019s why many parents choose actively teach their babies about object permanence, instead of just waiting for them to figure it out on their own (though they eventually will) with these engaging activities.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Peek-a-boo!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>An early childhood classic, peek-a-boo involves little more than <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> and your familiar face. Once you\u2019ve got <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> attention, make your face disappear by covering up with both hands and then, voila! Bring it back with a big smile. Many babies and parents love this game for it is whimsy, but it also serves as a beginner\u2019s lesson in object permanence.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Where\u2019d it go?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Try sitting <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> right in front of <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite toy or household object. Then, cover this object with a light cloth, but leave a small piece of the object sticking out. This will give <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> some assurance that <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite object is still partially there. Give <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> a few minutes to try pulling the cloth off the hidden object without assistance. If <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they has<\/span> trouble working out how to free <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite object, though, you can offer a helping hand &#8211; <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> will still learn a lot.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Now you see me, now you hear me:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Once <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> seems comfortable with disappearing objects and faces, it\u2019s time to take your object permanence demonstrations to the next level. Start talking to <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> while <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> safe in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> crib, and then slowly step out of the room. Remove yourself from <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s line of sight, and keep talking. <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They may<\/span> become fussy at first, but the comforting sound of your voice will help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> grasp that even if you\u2019re not right there, you\u2019re still close enough to come back in and scoop <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> up in both arms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a sticky summer morning and you open up the cupboard, only to find yourself staring eye to antenna with a huge carpenter ant!
