{"id":10676,"date":"2019-05-16T05:42:56","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T09:42:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10676\/babys-vision-in-the-first-month\/"},"modified":"2021-10-18T01:22:02","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T05:22:02","slug":"babys-vision-in-the-first-month","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10676\/babys-vision-in-the-first-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Your newborn&#8217;s vision in the first month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/10680\/hearing-in-the-first-month\/\"><span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s hearing<\/a>, <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> vision takes a while to develop, and should be tracked throughout the first few months.<\/p>\n<h2>What the vision of your newborn may be like<\/h2>\n<p>Newborns can only see blurry shapes because they are nearsighted, so <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> best vision is 8 to 12 inches (about 20-30 cm) away. During this time, <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> loves to look at faces, including yours and <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own, so be sure to interact frequently.<\/p>\n<h3>World of color:<\/h3>\n<p>Color vision is also developing in the first month, and by a week old, <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> will be able to see red, orange, yellow, and green. Blues and violets take longer for newborns because these colors have shorter wavelengths. Brightly colored wall hangings and toys help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to distinguish color and form, but if you want your baby to appreciate your decorating skills, steer clear of pastels, since they&#8217;re difficult for <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to appreciate. Patterns and high contrast objects, like checkerboards and concentric circles, are also quite visible, and good for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s eye development. Lighter tones, on the other hand, will be harder for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> make out for a while.<\/p>\n<h3>Wandering eyes:<\/h3>\n<p>During <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s first months, <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> eyes have a difficult time distinguishing between two items and moving between two images. It takes time for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> to actually learn to see, because <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> two eyes need to learn to work together. <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s eyes may wander or cross, but should focus and be able to track objects after the first month or so. <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">Their<\/span> eyes are also much less sensitive to light than yours, so don\u2019t worry about leaving lights on in the nursery.
