In the next few years, the rapid vocabulary growth that <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s been experiencing is going to start to slow down (as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they comes<\/span> to know a lot of the words <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019ll<\/span> use in <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> day-to-day life), but <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> language skills are going to keep growing dramatically as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they starts<\/span> to master the art of having a conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Involved conversations may not be a huge part of <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s social life now &#8211; in fact, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> probably only just starting to get around to really interacting with other young children when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they plays<\/span> at all. As <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they interacts<\/span> with adults, though, and as <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> peers\u2019 social skills grow along with <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own, <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> ability to hold a meaningful conversation is going to become more and more important &#8211; and you can help make sure <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019s<\/span> on the right track.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Getting the conversation started<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> may not quite understand the nuanced mechanics of back-and-forth conversation yet, the best way to learn is by doing, which makes now a great time for you and <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> to gab it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask questions:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8230;and then wait for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> to answer. A lot of the social instincts that adults have can feel really normal and basic, like things young children should just be able to pick up on by listening &#8211; and a lot of the time, they do. At other times, though, for one reason or another, toddlers may not get the memo on certain social scripts &#8211; you\u2019ve probably talked to <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> about how \u201cthank you\u201d is responded to with \u201cyou\u2019re welcome,\u201d but if someone asks <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> how <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span>, a young child may not yet have gotten the memo that it\u2019s kind to ask that person how they are too.
