Here\u2019s a glimpse of what changes to expect this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Language:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past year, you likely witnessed a vocabulary explosion, as <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> figured out all kinds of new words, and began stringing words together into phrases, and even sentences. This year, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they will<\/span> continue to expand <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> speech, until <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019s<\/span> speaking in sentences of about six words. <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> will now be better understood by strangers and will be capable of carrying on short conversations. You may notice <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> getting a little mixed up over tenses, using phrases like, \u201cThen the boy runned away.\u201d Feel free to correct <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, or to just gently repeat back the correct construction, but don\u2019t stress about it. <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They\u2019ll<\/span> learn best over time just by listening to the way you speak&nbsp;and hearing other people using language. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sleep: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children drop their afternoon nap this year, though their total sleep in a 24-hour period should remain at about 11 hours, whether that\u2019s all nighttime sleep, or still including a nap. You may experience some challenges with bedtime this year, as <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> learns to push the limits, requesting \u201cjust one more\u201d story or song.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Potty training: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most girls potty train just before their third birthdays, with boys training not long after. If <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> still doesn\u2019t seem interested in potty training early in the year, don\u2019t fret. Potty training isn\u2019t considered truly delayed until age 4. You can start to encourage <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to use the potty, and take <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> in to try it a few times during the day, such as once every two hours. If <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they fights<\/span> you, take a step back and wait a few more weeks before trying again. Pushing <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to train before <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> ready won\u2019t help, and may turn potty training into a power struggle between you and <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Preschool: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, you will be faced with the decision of whether to start <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> in preschool. Starting school is a major transition for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>, and it can be helpful to keep as much of the rest of <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> routine consistent as possible, to help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> feel more secure and in control. As with any big change, beginning school can cause regressions in some areas, like sleep or potty training. Be patient, and remember that with consistency from you, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they will<\/span> get back on track once <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they gets<\/span> used to the new routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Social: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socially, <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> will begin playing <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> peers this year, instead of just <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them. You can help encourage good social behavior by modeling how to interact with friends, as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they learns<\/span> most by watching you.
