At this age, most toddlers have a vocabulary of about 300 words, although there\u2019s definitely variation among children. Like all milestones, some children develop speech at this age faster, while other toddlers take their time a little more as they get to know the language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that\u2019s common for all toddlers who are learning to speak is mispronouncing words. Since language is still new to <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>, if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they mispronounces<\/span> words now and then, it\u2019s to be expected, and it\u2019s generally nothing to worry about.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Common pronunciation problems<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some letter sounds are easier for toddlers to make, like the \u201cm,\u201d \u201cb,\u201d and \u201cp\u201d sounds. This is because they can see these letters being formed on your lips when parents and other adults speak to them. However, other sounds are formed in the back of the throat, and are harder for toddlers to learn and pronounce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common issues with toddler speech include letter substitutions, like using the \u201cy\u201d sound instead of \u201cl\u201d in words. Your toddler may also drop consonants at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of words. Many toddlers also have difficulty combining sounds, like \u201cbl,\u201d so that \u201cblack\u201d becomes \u201cback\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>When should I intervene?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pronunciation issues can present difficulty for parents and other listeners, as they do certainly make toddlers more difficult to understand. Still, mispronunciation is expected as <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> learns to speak, and will usually resolve on its own around age 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, you can help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> learn the way words are supposed to be said by making sure <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they hears<\/span> them said the right way as often as possible &#8211; read lots of books with <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, and continue to model the correct pronunciation of words when you talk to <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> &#8211; even if <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> mispronunciations are <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really cute<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they does<\/span> mispronounce a word, there\u2019s no need to make a big issue of it. Instead, repeat the word back correctly. For example, if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they<\/span> bumped <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> \u201cyeg,\u201d try saying, \u201cOh no! Let\u2019s kiss the boo-boo on your leg.\u201d This will allow <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to hear it correctly without making <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> feel embarrassed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Is it something more?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most toddlers grow out of speech issues, but some need a bit of extra help. If you\u2019re finding <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is particularly difficult to understand, or that <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> speech is not progressing, it may be worth an evaluation to rule out any more severe language problems.
