{"id":104409,"date":"2020-04-03T08:59:04","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T12:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.oviahealth.com\/guide\/104409\/growth-spurts-through-childhood\/"},"modified":"2021-10-25T14:18:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T18:18:10","slug":"growth-spurts-through-childhood","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/104409\/growth-spurts-through-childhood\/","title":{"rendered":"Growth spurts through childhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> can\u2019t stop, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they can\u2019t<\/span> even slow down &#8211; as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they moves<\/span> through this first year of <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> life, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019s<\/span> going to triple <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> birth weight, and in the first half of <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> first year, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they could<\/span> grow as much as an inch per month &#8211; before slowing down in the second half to just about 3\/8ths of an inch, or about a centimeter, every month. All that growing doesn\u2019t happen steadily, though, and most babies have a few growth spurts &#8211; stretches of time when they\u2019re growing a lot very quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>When do growth spurts happen?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth spurts often happen at certain common times in the first time &#8211; usually some time around two weeks old, two months old, four months old, and six months old. They can happen at any time, though, and sometimes, you may not even know it until <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> needs to move up to the next size of onesie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs that <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> might be in the middle of a growth spurt include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eating more:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All that growth needs fuel! Most babies who are going through growth spurts may be hungry more often, or may eat more when mealtime comes around.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sleep changes:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For many babies having growth spurts, it\u2019s tiring work, and they may need more or longer naps, or may sleep longer at night. However, this isn\u2019t universal, and some babies sleep more restlessly during growth spurts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fussiness: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During growth spurts, some parents report that babies are a little fussier or crankier than usual, and may cry a little more often than they have been lately. Don\u2019t worry &#8211; growth spurts pass quickly, and you\u2019ll have your sunny <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> back before you know it!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth spurts are a normal part of the way babies grow up.
