Baby<\/span> has spent so much time not being ready to play <\/span>with<\/span><\/em> other children, and getting almost all the social interaction they’s<\/span> needed from within your family, but at this point, they\u2019s<\/span> reaching the age where a little extra socialization, and especially social interaction with other toddlers, could be fun, interesting, and helpful for them<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

If Baby<\/span> goes to a nursery school or daycare with other children, they may<\/span> be getting all the socializing they needs<\/span> already, but if they is<\/span> at home with a caregiver, or in individual care, this can be a great time to start making regular playdates a little bit more of a priority than before.<\/p>\n

Still, most toddlers won\u2019t be ready for what\u2019s called \u201ccooperative play\u201d yet, which is what many adults mean when they talk about children playing together. In fact, many toddlers won\u2019t start to get the hang of real cooperative play until they\u2019re around four or even five. In the meantime, toddlers playing together may play near each other, copy each other, share materials, or even take turns with some toys.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Baby<\/span> ends up playing with older kids, on the other hand, the picture might look a little different. Toddlers generally love to imitate older children and can learn a lot by watching them. This means that, on play dates with older children, you may find Baby<\/span> following their<\/span> slightly-less-little friend\u2019s lead. It also means that, if Baby<\/span> has a slightly older friend, cousin, or sibling who they wants<\/span> to be <\/span>just like<\/span><\/em>, you can encourage any skills or habits you\u2019re hoping they will<\/span> pick up – whether that\u2019s using the potty, trying new foods, or using silverware – by giving them<\/span> the chance to see their<\/span> friend doing those things.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, this can also go the other way – bigger kids can sometimes help toddlers learn certain words that many parents hope they won\u2019t pick up. If Baby<\/span> is friends with an older child, or even a child their<\/span> own age with a big personality, you may find yourself needing to have the \u201cThat might be okay in so-and-so\u2019s house, but it isn\u2019t okay in ours\u201d conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making friends for the first time is an adventure for Baby<\/span>, but it\u2019ll also be an adventure for you. Have fun!<\/span><\/p>\n

Milestones<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Takes turns in games: <\/strong>Whether it\u2019s a toddler-friendly board game, a ball-pass game at nursery school, or waiting until the toddler who was there ahead of them<\/span> on the slide takes a turn before sliding down, Baby<\/span> is getting better at learning the rules of the game – both the literal game they\u2019s<\/span> playing and the rules of social interaction and being polite. They may<\/span> slip up now and then, but once they starts<\/span> to understand what\u2019s expected of them<\/span> enough to know that they should<\/span> be taking turns, encouraging them<\/span> to play nicely should start to go more smoothly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turns a door handle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a different kind of \u201cturning,\u201d and they can<\/span> do it based on a different kind of skill – their<\/span> coordination – and a different kind of growth – their<\/span> height. It\u2019s going to take them<\/span> places, too – literal places, unless you get really careful about locking doors and setting boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n
