{"id":103414,"date":"2021-02-24T06:35:16","date_gmt":"2021-02-24T11:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.oviahealth.com\/guide\/103414\/parenting-pre-reading-third-year\/"},"modified":"2021-11-03T17:31:42","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T21:31:42","slug":"parenting-pre-reading-third-year","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.oviahealth.com\/guide\/103414\/parenting-pre-reading-third-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Pre-reading skills in the third year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you read, you begin with \u2018A,\u2019 \u2018B,\u2019 \u2018C,\u2019\u201d <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sound of Music<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> declares, but as trustworthy a source as that musical sounds, when it comes to the way your toddler starts to develop <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> written and printed language skills, it isn\u2019t quite true. Long before \u201c\u2018A,\u2019 \u2018B,\u2019 \u2018C,\u2019\u201d or at least before <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> ABCs are anything except for a fun song, <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> has been building what are called <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-reading<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> skills, and in the time between <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> second and third birthdays, those pre-reading skills grow bigger and stronger than they ever have before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Pre-reading skills this year<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your toddler may already have some pre-reading skills, like the ability to connect a picture of something in a book with the idea of what it\u2019s a picture of in real life &#8211; <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they might<\/span> see a picture of a cat in a book and point to Fluffy as she runs across the room and under the couch, for example. <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They may<\/span> point to pictures in books when you ask <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> where a certain object or character is on the page, and <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they may<\/span> even be starting to make the connection between the words you\u2019re saying to <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> out loud, and the shapes of the letters on the page you\u2019re reading off of. If <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they isn\u2019t<\/span> doing these things, there\u2019s a good chance that <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019ll<\/span> start to soon. And as the year goes on, you\u2019ll probably also start to notice <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Starting to understand story and narrative:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This might come in the form of getting a little scared for a character in a book during a suspenseful part, giggling with you when something silly happens in the book, and being able to answer questions about the story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Becoming more engaged with reading:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This might look like having a favorite book, remembering what it looks like and picking it out to read again, finishing sentences along with your when you read a much-loved book to <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, or noticing if you change a word or phrase.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Understanding the mechanics of reading:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This might look like holding a book and pretending to read, turning or trying to turn the pages of a book, knowing to hold the book right-side-up or even turning the pages going from front to back, and scribbling on paper in a way that might start to imitate writing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Encouraging pre-reading<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most basic ways to encourage toddlers\u2019 early reading skills is just to make sure their language skills are as strong as possible. Spoken language is the base most children build their understanding of written language off of, and the stronger they are as communicators in general, the more easily they\u2019ll be able to transition to written communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, the best way to build your toddler\u2019s language skills is just to talk to <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, as often and as engagingly as you can. Talking about <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> interests is a great way to get your little one involved in the conversation, but talking about your interests, or about the world around you and <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, is a great way to introduce new vocabulary and concepts. Having a wide variety of conversations with <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is the best way to engage with <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, and to make sure <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> language abilities keep growing as fast as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A note on dropping the \u201cpre-\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s possible for toddlers to start learning to read at very young ages, or at least to start memorizing in ways that can start to lead to reading, there is no proof that starting to read earlier than their peers is helpful for young children in the long run. Toddlers who read early may be ahead of their classmates in terms of academics for a few years &#8211; or they may not, or they may just be a little extra bored in class for a few years &#8211; but there is no evidence that this advantage, if it is an advantage, lasts longer than a few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, it comes down to supporting your toddler\u2019s interests. If <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interested <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not just in being read to, but in figuring out how to read for <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> at an early age, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they may<\/span> look to you to help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>, and that\u2019s wonderful. If, on the other hand, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> still more interested in being the listener at storytime, there\u2019s nothing wrong with letting <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> sit back and be read to for a few more years, before it\u2019s time for <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to start reading for <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span>.
