Your toddler is like the brooding hero of an action movie – they hears<\/span> and understands more than they says<\/span> – yes, even if they is<\/span> a little chatterbox already. Any good story has character development, though, and Baby<\/span>\u2019s character is developing more and more every day. As their<\/span> third year of learning their<\/span> first language goes on, they is<\/span> going to keep understanding more and more, but more than that, they is<\/span> going to get a lot more serious about responding to the things they hears<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Receptive language<\/strong><\/h4>\n

By the second year, toddlers generally understand most of what their parents say to them, and that understanding is only increasing every day. At this point, your toddler probably is able to understand and follow simple, one- and two-step sets of directions, as long as they knows<\/span> all of the words you\u2019re using. They still might<\/span> have some trouble with directions when they use vocabulary they doesn\u2019t<\/span> know, or are asking them<\/span> to do something they hasn\u2019t<\/span> done before, but they is<\/span> learning more about the world every day. Soon, it\u2019ll be a lot harder to stump them<\/span> with your vocabulary, so if you want to still be able to, you\u2019d better get that thesaurus ready.<\/span><\/p>\n

Active language<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Get ready for a great leap forward – Baby<\/span>\u2019s vocabulary, which may be hovering around 50 words right now, will probably double over the course of the next year. And while they may<\/span> have figured out the trick of combining those words into two-word phrases, by the end of the coming year, they may<\/span> be using three- or more-word sentences. It\u2019s not just the sentences that are going to grow, though, it\u2019s also the types of words that are in them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your toddler\u2019s vocabulary, has probably been a lot of nouns up until now (like \u201ccar,\u201d \u201cdog,\u201d \u201cspoon,\u201d or \u201cmilk,\u201d), and they still will<\/span>, but they will<\/span> also start to branch out into some verbs (like \u201cgo,\u201d \u201ctalk,\u201d \u201cplay,\u201d or \u201crun,\u201d), and even some adjective (like \u201cbig,\u201d \u201chot,\u201d or even \u201cscary.\u201d) It\u2019s also around this time that they might<\/span> start to gain more of an understanding of pronouns (like, \u201cI,\u201d \u201cmy,\u201d \u201cyou,\u201d \u201che,\u201d or \u201cshe,\u201d). <\/span><\/p>\n

They might<\/span> start to be able to use words to locate things, too, whether that means locating dinner as \u201cafter\u201d naptime, or their<\/span> favorite toy dog as \u201cunder\u201d the table. They also might<\/span> start to have a better understanding of concepts of <\/span>amount<\/span><\/em>, which you might see most of when they decides<\/span> they wants<\/span> \u201c<\/span>more.”<\/span><\/em> <\/p>\n

But what does it <\/strong>mean<\/em><\/strong>?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Aside from the fact that they can<\/span> understand the world better, and make themselves<\/span> understood to you better, your toddler\u2019s growing language skills show a lot about the way their<\/span> mind is developing as they grows<\/span>. For example, their<\/span> ability to use pronouns, even early on, when they might<\/span> not be too good at it, says that they is<\/span> strong in their<\/span> understanding of themselves<\/span> as a person who is separate from their<\/span> parents. More than that, using pronouns like \u201che\u201d and \u201cshe\u201d means that they has<\/span> noticed that the people in their<\/span> world are divided up into the categories of male and female, and that they is<\/span> starting to understand what the rules of those divisions are – even if they doesn\u2019t<\/span> always get it right yet.<\/span> <\/p>\n

When they talks<\/span> about people or objects that aren\u2019t with them<\/span> right now, it\u2019s a sign of their<\/span> growing memory and their<\/span> ability to make connections between the present and the past. You might also start to notice that, when they talks<\/span>, they sounds<\/span> a little like your partner, or like you! They may<\/span> pick up your inflections, the way you talk, and even your attitudes about things. Their<\/span> fast-growing language skills are just one way to keep an eye on all the things they is<\/span> learning from you.<\/span> <\/p>\n
