Can you imagine seeing a bird for the first time right now? A feathery little creature FLYING through the air? You&#8217;d be totally amazed and probably have a million questions. Can all animals do that? Is it safe? Does the bird like it? What about the wind? Can I fly? Why not? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s how <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> feels about nearly everything, even things that might seem less exciting than the idea of flying. <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They is<\/span> learning every day, and <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> super curious about the world around <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span>. <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is probably going to spend a lot of time asking you why something is the way that it is or why you want <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to do something. Why is <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they<\/span> asking?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They doesn&#8217;t<\/span> understand something and needs you to help <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> figure it out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They is<\/span> making conversation. How polite!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They doesn&#8217;t<\/span> remember the last time you talked about it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They wants<\/span> to hear the sound of your voice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They thinks<\/span> it&#8217;s a fun word to say.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They likes<\/span> being able to communicate with you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They doesn&#8217;t<\/span> want to do what you&#8217;re asking and is trying to distract you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They wants<\/span> you to change your mind about something.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">They is<\/span> bored.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explanations will work in some cases, but when <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> asks &#8220;Why?&#8221;, it&#8217;s likely that <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they isn&#8217;t<\/span> actually looking for an answer. That&#8217;s why you might find yourself trying to answer the same questions over and over again without seeing any results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you&#8217;ve already given the &#8220;real&#8221; answer to a &#8220;Why?&#8221;, you might be stumped as to where to turn next. How can you answer this seemingly eternal question? One trick that many parents find helpful is to turn the question back around on <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>! Ask <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> what <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they thinks<\/span> the answer is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Put your shoes on, please.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Why?&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Why do you think?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Because we&#8217;re going?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Yep, you got it!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with less practical questions like, &#8220;Why is the sun so bright?&#8221;, you can ask <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they has<\/span> any theories. Toddlers are really creative, and when <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>&#8216;s goal is to start a conversation with you, this is a great way of extending it beyond, &#8220;It&#8217;s a really hot star and shines light on us as the earth rotates around it.&#8221;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also try answering <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>&#8216;s question with another question to guide <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> toward the answer. &#8220;Why do I have to eat dinner?&#8221; What will happen if you don&#8217;t? Won&#8217;t you be hungry later? If <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> can answer your questions, <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they can<\/span> answer <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re not going to be able to satisfy every &#8220;Why?&#8221; question from your little one, but you can encourage <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to stay curious about <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> world by doing your best to engage with <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> questions.
