Baby<\/span> may be too young for Scrabble to be anything other than a choking hazard, but that doesn’t mean they isn’t<\/span> ready to start to have fun with sounds. Rhyming is one of the earliest ways to play with sound that children learn, and it\u2019s a great building block for future learning, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rhyming teaches children to hear and identify the individual sounds in words, instead of thinking of the words themselves as units. This will be important when Baby<\/span> is learning to read and write, since it\u2019s the individual sounds (represented by letters) that make up the words they will<\/span> be learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Play catch<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The rhyming version of \u201ccatch\u201d can be played with or without a ball. It\u2019s as simple as you saying a word when you pass (or \u201cpass\u201d if you\u2019re using an imaginary ball) a ball to your toddler (like \u201ccat\u201d), and they says<\/span> a rhyming word when they passes<\/span> it back to you (like \u201chat\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

Work on your improv<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Another fun rhyming game involves replacing the words in Baby<\/span>\u2019s favorite nursery rhymes or songs with words that rhyme with them. This only really works if it\u2019s a nursery rhyme your little one knows all the words to, but if there <\/span>is <\/span><\/em>a rhyme or song that they has<\/span> memorized, this silly game can be a great way to get the giggles rolling, whether it\u2019s because you and Baby<\/span> are going to <\/span>row, row, row your GOAT<\/span><\/em>, or because they just doesn\u2019t<\/span> want to bring their<\/span> <\/span>rubber YUCKY<\/span><\/em> into the bath with them<\/span>.
