If last year was the year of Baby<\/span> growing bigger and stronger every day, the coming year will be all about the things they is<\/span> learning how to <\/span>do<\/span><\/em>. The second year of a toddler\u2019s life is full of action, adventure, and gravity-defying stunts – and the very frazzled parents and caregivers who do their best to keep up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Motor skills<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The motor skills Baby<\/span> develops during this time will take them<\/span> to a whole new level of mobility, speed, and the adventure that comes with it. By the end of their<\/span> second year, your toddler will be able to:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Walk on their<\/span> own<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Pull a toy along behind them<\/span> as they<\/span> walks<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Carry a large toy, or several toys, while they is<\/span> walking<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Start to learn to run<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Stand on tiptoe<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Kick a ball<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Climb onto and off of furniture<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Walk up and down stairs while holding onto support<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Scribble using a marker, crayon, or pencil<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Build a tower that stacks four or more blocks<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Turn over a container to pour out whatever is in it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Communication<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    Another exciting part of the second year is that, instead of just watching each other carefully to pick up on each other\u2019s cues, Baby<\/span>\u2019s communication skills will just keep building until you and they can<\/span> communicate with each other <\/span>on purpose<\/span><\/em> on a fairly regular basis. As the second year goes on, they will<\/span> learn to:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Follow simple instructions<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Say several individual words (15 to 18 months)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Put two or more words together into connected thoughts, or even sentences (18 to 24 months)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Start to explore pronouns, probably \u201cmy\u201d and \u201cmine\u201d first<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Point to a few body parts with familiar names when asked to<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Points to pictures in a book when they hears<\/span> those things named<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Use many different consonants at the beginnings of words<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Use question words like where, when, or what<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Recognize familiar names and words<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Repeat words they<\/span> overhears<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Cognition<\/strong><\/h4>\n

      And none of the things they is<\/span> going to do or say would be possible without all the exciting new ways they is<\/span> learning to think about and look at the world around them<\/span>. Over the course of this year, they will<\/span> learn to:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Fully understand that they is<\/span> an individual, and a different person from you<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Start to understand the concept of ownership, which might seem like a roadblock to sharing, but ultimately is an understanding they will<\/span> need before real sharing is possible<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Recognize themselves<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • Begin to sort objects by shapes and colors, which shows their<\/span> growing understanding of grouping and sorting, which is necessary for everything from their<\/span> future math skills to their<\/span> growing understanding of language<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Begin to play pretend games, which is an early sign of abstract thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
