It\u2019s pretty tough, being a toddler – at no other point in your life are you expected to be fluent in a language that you\u2019ve only been studying for a little over a year, for one thing. When a toddler says their<\/span> first word, it can open the floodgates, but it can also be one step out of many, as they continues<\/span> to experiment with sound and meaning. Even once they starts<\/span> understanding and responding to words, they might<\/span> still be working on making sure the words they says<\/span> in return sound the way they should.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is where you come in – in your role as one of the people who knows Baby<\/span> better than anyone else in the world, you probably have a better chance than most people of knowing exactly what that string of vowels Baby<\/span> is calling out is supposed to mean, especially when they\u2019s<\/span> wiggling their<\/span> fingers like that, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

If your new job as Baby<\/span>-translator feels like it\u2019s already starting to get old, don\u2019t worry – they just needs<\/span> a little practice. They will<\/span> be a fluent speaker before you know it!<\/span><\/p>\n

How long will my role as Baby<\/span>-translator last?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At this point, even you may not always know what Baby<\/span> means, but by the time they is<\/span> about 18 months old, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll understand about 25% of their<\/span> words. That\u2019s just you, though – other adults in their<\/span> life may still be a little in the dark. However, their<\/span> ability to be understood should improve pretty steadily, and by the time they is<\/span> 4 years old, pretty much everything they says<\/span> should be understandable not just to you, but to people who have never even met Baby<\/span> before.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every child\u2019s language development moves at its own pace, but if you\u2019re still doing most of Baby<\/span>\u2019s interpreting for them<\/span> by the time they is<\/span> 3, it could be a sign that they is<\/span> having trouble with communication. The cognitive ability to speak is just one part of your toddler’s communication – understanding words, and finding ways to make themselves<\/span> understood are more telling. Even if they is<\/span> communicating well except for enunciation, though, it could be a sign that they\u2019s<\/span> having trouble hearing, or that the muscles in their<\/span> mouth are having trouble making the sounds they needs<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re concerned that your little one might have something that\u2019s getting in the way of their<\/span> ability to speak clearly, don\u2019t hesitate to talk it through with their<\/span> doctor. If the doctor is concerned, he or she may recommend an evaluation with a speech-language pathologist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responding to toddler-ese<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Your response to toddler-ese is important – it\u2019s a part of how they builds<\/span> their<\/span> confidence in their<\/span> growing communication, for one thing. When Baby<\/span> says something to you, and you understand what they means<\/span>, and respond in a way that they can<\/span> understand in return, it encourages them<\/span> to keep trying new things as they learns<\/span> to talk.<\/span><\/p>\n

This doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t let out the occasional giggle when one of their<\/span> word-experiments is a little too far outside the box, and no matter how much you practice, there\u2019s a good chance they will<\/span> occasionally say things you just can\u2019t figure out. As a general rule, though, they will<\/span> appreciate you taking these early communication attempts seriously, even if you have to do a little extra work to figure them out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other important part of your response to Baby<\/span>\u2019s more mumbley communication is that, by casually repeating their<\/span> sentence back to them<\/span>, you can model the right pronunciation of the words to them<\/span> without making them<\/span> feel self-conscious. This kind of mirroring also gives Baby<\/span> the chance to correct you if your translation isn\u2019t perfect – you may be the best Baby<\/span>-translator around, but that doesn\u2019t mean you won\u2019t slip up now and then.<\/span><\/p>\n
