At 17 months, that\u2019s a question your little one may have started asking <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> any time <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they has<\/span> any room to roam &#8211; or even when <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they doesn\u2019t<\/span>. As long as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> somewhere it\u2019s safe to run, running is a great way for <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> to strengthen <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> muscles and get some of the exercise <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they needs<\/span> as <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they grows<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it all depends on <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s personality, but there\u2019s a good chance that <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite games are pretty active these days in general, even if <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they isn\u2019t<\/span> running. For instance, <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> favorite thing to do with blocks is probably still knocking them down after someone stacks them up. Give <span class=\"pronoun-them\" data-pronoun=\"them\">them<\/span> a month or two, though, and <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they will<\/span> probably start figuring out the physics of stacking blocks for <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> &#8211; and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knock them down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ability to stack blocks on top of each other is a great sign of how much <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s fine motor control has grown. Another activity that\u2019s good for fine motor control, and that shows just how far <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> has come, is putting toys or beads into buckets or cups. More than a game, though, that\u2019s an activity that could be the beginning of <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> learning to clean up after <span data-pronoun=\"themselves\" class=\"pronoun-themselves\">themselves<\/span> after <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019s<\/span> done playing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s next well-child visit is about a month away, and when you\u2019re there, <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s healthcare provider may talk to you about setting limits for <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>, and using age-appropriate timeouts. He or she may also bring up toilet training. The vast majority of children aren\u2019t ready for toilet training at this point, but <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they is<\/span> probably getting closer and closer to being ready, and some children need to learn toilet training at a specific point as a part of their childcare program. It can be helpful to think about these subjects as they apply to your family before this well-child visit, so you can come in prepared with any questions you might have.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Milestones<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Picks up very small objects (beads, pebbles):<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s not just the big changes in <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s life that are exciting &#8211; the little things are a big deal, too, especially the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> little things. Your little one\u2019s ability to pick up very small objects is an example of very fine motor control that <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they\u2019s<\/span> been working towards since back when the only way <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they could<\/span> pick things up was by raking through them with <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> open hand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hits, kicks, or lashes out when upset:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s not the most fun milestone, but many children around <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span>\u2019s age go through a stage of lashing out when they\u2019re upset, especially if <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> great big feelings are growing faster than <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> language skills.
