Baby<\/span>\u2019s first (or first intentional!) word is an occasion –<\/em> it\u2019s exciting, it\u2019s a landmark, it\u2019s something to remember. Their<\/span> first sentence <\/em>comes with a different kind of anticipation – the kind that comes when single-word requests for \u201cwater!\u201d \u201cball!\u201d or so many children\u2019s favorite, \u201cmore!\u201d start to get old. Your second-grade teacher would be so proud of how excited you are to have more complex sentences in your home.<\/p>\n

The short answer is that children usually start stringing together two or three words into sentences or phrases sometime around 2 and a half years old. Different children follow different speech patterns, though, and just like slow walkers who skip the toddling phase entirely to just stand up one day and start training for the nearest marathon, it\u2019s impossible to tell whether a consistent winner of The Quiet Game is about to open up their<\/span> mouth and wow you with a paragraph, or if they is<\/span> going to slow-and-steady their<\/span> way straight into kindergarten.<\/p>\n

One of the other important things about that first two- or three-word sentence is that it\u2019s often a sign that a child is on the edge of another huge leap forward in their<\/span> language development. You think Baby<\/span> is learning a lot now, just because they has<\/span> gone from a non-verbal pile of adorable who wasn\u2019t even sure you were the same person when you changed your hairstyle to the bright, curious, interesting person they is<\/span> today? Well, you\u2019re right, but the difference between the person they is<\/span> now and the person they will<\/span> be when they can<\/span> share what they\u2019s<\/span> thinking with you is going to be staggering, too, and that first two-word sentence, even if it\u2019s as simple and potentially frustrating as \u201cno night-night,\u201d is where it starts.<\/p>\n

How can I encourage them<\/span>?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n

Baby<\/span> will start speaking in sentences when they is<\/span> ready, but there are also ways that you can help them<\/span> get ready, too.<\/p>\n

  • Converse: <\/strong>A great way to help Baby<\/span> be ready to speak in sentences is to give them<\/span> plenty of space to try it out by starting up back-and-forth conversations about their<\/span> life, surroundings, and the way they sees<\/span> the world. It doesn\u2019t matter if they isn\u2019t<\/span> ready to hold up their<\/span> side of the conversation just yet – as long as you give them<\/span> the space to respond, and don\u2019t get frustrated with them<\/span> if they isn\u2019t<\/span> ready to talk back yet, “conversations”, even one-sided ones, are a great place to start.<\/li>\n
  • Don\u2019t step in too soon: <\/strong>It can be frustrating to see Baby<\/span> struggling to communicate in ways that are as simple as the ABCs for you, but stepping in to finish what they is<\/span> saying, instead of letting them<\/span> try to find the words themselves<\/span> can frustrate their<\/span> effort, and take away their<\/span> motivation to figure out how to speak for themselves<\/span>.<\/li>\n
  • Narrate your life: <\/strong>By far the most important ingredient for Baby<\/span>\u2019s readiness to communicate in words is exposure to language. Being exposed to more words gives them<\/span> the chance to learn more vocabulary, learn to make connections between the words they knows<\/span> and the ones they doesn\u2019t<\/span> know yet, and just to recognize the patterns of their<\/span> native language. It\u2019s been proven that words spoken directly to babies have a much greater impact on their language development than words they just happen to be in the room to hear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
