Pacifiers, bottles, their<\/span> thumb, your<\/em> thumb – is there anything Baby<\/span> won\u2019t coat in saliva as they explores<\/span> it? While it\u2019s an interesting question, you probably don\u2019t want to be handing Baby<\/span> too many objects to use to find out.<\/p>\n

Exploring the world using their<\/span> mouth may seem like kind of doggy behavior for a human baby. It\u2019s completely expected, though, and when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. It gives them<\/span> the chance to find out both the texture and the taste of a new object, all in one motion. And when you\u2019re a new person learning about the world, you\u2019ll take your opportunities to multitask where you can get them.<\/p>\n

The interest in putting things in Baby<\/span>\u2019s mouth often comes at around the time when their<\/span> mouth starts to produce a bit more saliva, as a way of gearing up for when they is<\/span> ready for solid foods in a few weeks. The gnawing on things and the extra drool can make parents think they\u2019ve reached the beginning of teething. While it\u2019s possible, teething is still probably a few months away, as it usually starts around six months or so.<\/p>\n

Added drool isn\u2019t the only way Baby<\/span> is growing, either. At this point, they is<\/span> growing somewhere between a half an inch and a whole inch every month. They is<\/span> also building up their<\/span> neck muscles more and more every day – they may<\/span> have been able to lift their<\/span> head on their<\/span> own for a few weeks now, and from there, their<\/span> strength and control have only improved since then. In only a few weeks, Baby<\/span> will probably be holding up their<\/span> head on their<\/span> own when placed in a sitting position, and from there, it\u2019s just a hop, skip, jump, and great increase in trunk strength before they is<\/span> sitting up on their<\/span> own.<\/p>\n

This head and neck strength are crucial building blocks for much of Baby<\/span>\u2019s development going forward. Many of the major milestones coming up are totally dependent on Baby<\/span> being able to support themselves<\/span>, so it\u2019s very important to continue to make sure they is<\/span> getting proper nutrition, and plenty of tummy time to build those strong muscles.<\/p>\n

  • Responds to rattle or bell: <\/strong>Beyond just big, scary noises, Baby<\/span> is now picking up all sorts of audible stimuli. If you shake a rattle, or ring a light bell somewhere near Baby<\/span>, it\u2019s possible that they might<\/span> pick up on the sound, and try to turn in that direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Lifts head up 45 degrees: <\/strong>Baby<\/span> is part of the way to a push-up! Around the end of the third month, babies are often able to raise their heads at a 45-degree angle from a position on their<\/span> stomach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
