The American College\u00a0of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends a daily intake of 27 mg\/day for pregnant women.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"resource-content\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<h4><strong>How does iron help during pregnancy?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Iron\u2019s primary function is to help build healthy red blood cells in order to transport oxygen around the body. <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> is also dependent on your nutrients (and your iron) for quite a time, meaning <span class=\"pronoun-they\" data-pronoun=\"they\">they will<\/span> need to borrow\u00a0your iron to construct <span class=\"pronoun-their\" data-pronoun=\"their\">their<\/span> own red blood cells. Iron also helps build myoglobin, the protein that delivers oxygen to the muscles, allowing <span class=\"pronoun-baby\" data-pronoun=\"baby\">Baby<\/span> to grow big and strong. Iron deficiency during pregnancy is related to low birth weight, premature birth, and heart problems, so the importance of consuming enough cannot be overstated.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because your blood volume increases so much during pregnancy, it\u2019s very common to experience anemia, which is usually caused by a lower-than-desired amount of iron in the body. Blood counts and ferritin levels at various points in pregnancy check your iron levels, and low levels can be treated with diet changes, supplements, and IV infusions when necessary. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What are some good sources of iron?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Iron-fortified cereal, bread, and pasta:<\/strong> Hot and cold cereals, breads, and pastas usually contain fortified grains. Not all will be iron-fortified, however, so it\u2019s important to make sure you choose those that are rich in iron.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red meat:<\/strong> Red meat, whether pork, beef, or lamb, is very high in iron content. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the highest per serving foods for iron.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>White meat like chicken, turkey, and pork:\u00a0<\/strong>Another excellent source of iron, and typically lower in saturated fat than red meat.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beans:<\/strong> Almost all beans have a very high iron content. Beans are a great source of iron (and protein), particularly for a vegetarian who may have trouble finding their daily suggested amount otherwise.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Soybeans and tofu:<\/strong> Another great source of iron for vegetarians (or anyone who enjoys it), these options add a healthy dose of iron to any meal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Chickpeas:<\/strong> like beans, chickpeas are very high in iron per serving. Keep in mind that although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commercially<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sold hummus contains some chickpeas &#8211; it is not usually high in iron.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cooked dark leafy greens:<\/strong> Although not always well absorbed in their raw form, dark leafy greens do contain a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose of iron that is better absorbed when cooked.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dried fruit:<\/strong> Some dried <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fruit,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like apricot and mango, are great snack choices that contain iron.
